Sitting down with Dr. Zach Bush

As one of only a few triple board-certified physicians in the country, with specialties of internal medicine, endocrinology and metabolism, and hospice/palliative care, Dr. Zach Bush is at the forefront of understanding and educating others on the gut-brain connection. At the upcoming Physicians Brain Regeneration Conference in Orlando, Dr. Bush will lead attendees through an eye-opening discussion on understanding the intertwined biology of the human gut and neurologic systems.

As we see our society bombarded with neurological disorders of epic proportions, the gut-brain axis has become one of the most researched and published topics in modern science and medicine. Encompassing immune function, neurotransmitter production, to neuroanatomy structure, the microbiome is the control center for the gut-brain continuum. Through his work, Dr. Bush strives to create a new framework for the clinical and basic science therapies of the future encouraging neurologic health by way of the gastrointestinal system.

“In medical school, we are trained to believe that there is this long list of diseases out there and they will eventually creep up on us all and when they do there is a checklist of pharmaceuticals to be used as treatments,” said Bush. “Essentially, we are taught to practice disease fear or disease management as opposed to being taught about how human health, or even lack thereof, actually happens.”

Dr. Bush, like other integrative physicians, steps away from that traditional model of education and brings conference participants along a path of connecting the dots between gut and brain health. His lecture will reveal new science on the extraordinary interaction between the environment, the microbiome of our macro and micro ecosystems and the gut and central neurologic systems. He will present scientific understanding of the collateral systems of the intestinal epithelium and neuroendocrine systems in the human body and empower attendees to walk away with new clinical insights, especially in areas of environmental factors that play a role in neurological stress.

“My hope is that physicians will leave feeling like they can quickly, in a busy clinic day, actually realize where the patient is in relation to an intact eco system or a completely collapsed eco system,” said Bush. “That they would then be able to recognize which symptoms are relating back to this issue of gut health and the inflammation that could emerge from a deficiency of that microbiome and nutritional environment.”

Dr. Bush graduated from the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, completed his residency at the University of Virginia in Internal Medicine and completed a Fellowship at the University of Virginia in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. He works tirelessly to bring about change in the way we view the human body, the effects our environment plays on our health and strives to be a vital force in changing the direction our world is headed. He looks forward to the yearly ACIM conference and considers it a homecoming of sorts for those physicians who have exited the typical academic environment and are forging away from the clinical paradigm toward an integrative model.

In addition to his scheduled presentation throughout the Physicians Brain Regeneration Conference he will also be speaking at the Get Your Brain Back Now public seminar scheduled for the last two evenings of the conference.

“Those who attend and speak at the ACIM conference are rugged individualists by nature, we have to be, and we are pretty good at surviving alone, but it’s not healthy to do so,” said Bush. “I feel like this conference is critical in giving us the opportunity to hug each other, embrace each other as a community and be able to recognize the challenges we are all facing economically, intellectually and socially and to come around each other. Some of my closest friends are with ACIM and while we only see each other once or twice a year the time we have is extremely rich and it grounds us, it lets us walk away with a sense of family that is really lacking in this digital era.”
