Nitric oxide (NO) is one of the most important molecules produced within our body. Loss of NO production within the human body is associated with the onset and progression of a number of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease. Ageing is a complex process involving defects in various cellular components. The latest evidence suggests a unifying mechanism for cellular aging that is relevant to the development of common age-related diseases. There is now emerging evidence that NO controls and regulates many processes that affect and control how we age as well as we well we perform with age. Three important examples are 1) telomere protection, 2) mitochondrial ATP production and 3) recruitment of stem cells. All three of these processes are dependent on healthy nitric oxide production. Further, evidence shows that their natural age-related degeneration can actually be slowed or reversed with NO restoration. Recognizing NO deficiency early in the aging population and then implementing therapeutic interventions and lifestyle modification known to improve NO production will have a major impact on public health and the aging process. These concepts will be reviewed and discussed. |

Title: Regeneration By Stopping the Degeneration
Objectives:
1. Review the causes of tissue/organ degeneration
2. Understand inter-relationships between the various causes of degeneration

Many factors have been shown to cause degeneration of the body and aging. So the most important steps to take to accomplish regeneration of the body are to remove the degenerative causes. Stem cells are produced every day in our bone marrow. When those stem cells migrate from the bone marrow into a degenerated tissue, they can fail to form new healthy cells there if certain conditions are present in those tissues. Hypoxia, acid-alkaline imbalance, physical toxins, microbial infections, nutrient depletion, hormonal & neurotransmitter imbalances and excessive electromagnetic fields are some of those degenerative conditions that must be resolved or at least improved before the stem cells can mature and form new healthy tissues. Dr. Cowden will discuss steps that can be taken to regenerate degenerated tissues and organs and give some case examples to illustrate these steps. |

Most people in our society are on the slippery slope of disease and dysfunction. Can a damaged body be revitalized and even be rebuilt? The free radical theory of aging posits that aging is caused by accumulation of damage inflicted by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Although this concept has been very useful in defining the contribution of oxidative damage to the aging process, an increasing number of studies contradict it. Recently we have learned that oxidative stress and free radical production is essential in healing and metabolic health. Professor Randolph Howes, MD, Ph.D. gave a lecture titled, Oxidation and Mitochondrial Function: Antioxidant Snake Oil, at ACAM (American College of Advanced Medicine) in 2013. He discussed the danger of over consuming anti-oxidant supplements, especially fat soluble anti-oxidants from beta carotene and vitamin E. He is a researcher, prolific writer, and wrote many books including, Danger of Excessive Antioxidants in Cancer Patients and U.T.O.P.I.A. (Unified Theory of Oxygen Participation in Aerobiosis). We must have a balance between anti-oxidants and oxidants in order to achieve optimal health. |

Title: Restoring Lost Vision
Objectives:

Purpose is to Demonstrate the effectiveness of alternative modalities in improving vision in chronic eye conditions even when administered over a short term period. These 11 ocular conditions are ordinarily considered incurable by any method except surgery – and even with surgery the outcomes can be variable and/or transient. Seventy-eight percent of the patients had either Age-Related Macular Degeneration or Glaucoma which together are the leading cause of blindness in persons over 65 years of age. Alternative treatments used were: IV Nutrition, Oxidative therapy, Microcurrent Stimulation, and Syntonic Light therapy. Each participant received each modality in the protocol. Following the administration of the protocol, significant improvement in Acuity, Contrast, and Visual Field resulted in the majority of participants. None of the interventions was toxic or painful, and all likely contributed to improved overall health status of the participants. Long term follow-up studies are now in process. |

Over the past few years peri-spinal pain, impingement and avulsion of the spinal nerves (especially C4-5,C5-6) have been demonstrated to produce oxidative stress. In addition, these patients' intestines exhibit chronic inflammation secondary to gram negative bacteria, yeast and heavy metals. The chronic oxidative stresses in the gut wall prevent the formation of serotonin, which aggravates the neurons. Monocytes in the gut and spinal nerves are subjected to repetitive oxidative stress that leads to the misfolding of the monocytes' SOD. When there is a spinal cord injury, the oxidized monocytes and stem cells settle into the injured spinal nerve and carry these poisons and misfolded SOD into the cord where the microglia, astroglia and then motor neurons are damaged and finally die. My ALS program of removing oxidative stress, preventing the monocytes from entering into the cord, and the use of stem cells for neural repair has produced significant benefits in about thirty patients. |
